quake 6 teaser sneaks into xbox event, fans erupt

Jan 19, 2024 9:46 PM

Excitement is mounting among Xbox enthusiasts and Quake fans following a teaser indicating the potential development of Quake 6. During the Xbox Developer Direct 2024 event, a showcase filled with updates such as release dates, game reveals, and insights into future titles, an unexpected hint surfaced. The tease came in the form of a whiteboard sighting within MachineGames’ segment, where the words 'Quake 6' were spotted alongside the franchise's iconic logo.

The community on the Quake subreddit was quick to notice and has since been abuzz with speculation regarding the prospect of a new installment in the storied Quake series. Although Quake 5 doesn't exist under that title, Quake Champions is often considered its spiritual successor. The Quake series has traditionally been developed by id Software, but MachineGames is also intimately familiar with Quake, having contributed to expansions for the original game and a recent remaster of Quake 2.

Although details are scarce and there has been no official announcement, MachineGames seems poised to possibly take on the next Quake project, promising to continue their legacy of first-person shooter excellence. MachineGames has been reached out to for comments, but at the time of writing, they have not provided any statements confirming the development of Quake 6.

What could Quake 6 look like and who would develop it?

The exact nature of Quake 6 remains speculative, but if it is in development, it is likely to carry forward the fast-paced, first-person shooter action the series is known for. Given their past work on Quake expansions and remasters, MachineGames could be the studio developing the new title, bringing their expertise in revitalizing classic FPS games to the table.

Quake is a first-person shooter video game series originally created by id Software. The franchise started with the release of the first Quake in 1996, which revolutionized the genre with its software technology allowing for full real-time 3D rendering. The series has a dedicated fanbase and is known for its fast-paced gameplay, dark fantasy and Lovecraftian horror themes, and pioneering multiplayer modes. As of 2021, the series has seen a significant remaster, bringing it back to public attention and potentially paving the way for future titles like the hinted Quake 6.

MachineGames dipping their toes in the realm of Quake has me cautiously optimistic. If they're helming Quake 6, their expertise in reimagining classics could inject new life into the venerated series while satisfying that old-school shooter itch.
