Rick and Morty Creators on Auditioning Thousands of New Voices: Everyone Sounded Like Macho Man

The replacement of voice actors for Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith was not an easy task. The beloved Rick & Morty characters were originally given life by series co-creator Justin Roiland, but now, Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden have stepped into the roles. Series co-creator Dan Harmon and showrunner Scott Marder revealed that the casting process required sifting through countless candidates from all over the world. Marder told The Hollywood Reporter, "Rick was a lot harder than I expected; everyone sounded like Macho Man Randy Savage or like a cousin of his. No one sounded exactly like Rick." The exhaustive task was drawn out over six months as the creators listened to thousands of auditions. Both of the selected actors emerged from casting calls, but it was only after a rigorous vocal bootcamp that they secured their positions.

The goal, according to Marder, was to provide fans with an experience free of disruption, maintaining the essence of the characters they've grown attached to. Irrespective of people's opinions on the new voices, Cardoni and Belden are here to stay. The changes were unveiled in the Season 7 Premiere of Rick and Morty. Amongst the fans, the change has sparked all sorts of opinions. Still, it represents a new chapter for the popular series. As for the dynamic duo: they're divided, broh, and aren't going anywhere soon.
