Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai has revealed the reason behind discontinuing the creation of intricate character reveal cutscenes. In a recent YouTube video, Sakurai expressed his initial intention was to provide these cutscenes as a rewarding element for players progressing through the game's adventure mode. However, due to leaks and unauthorized online postings, including by international media with early access to the games, Sakurai decided to stop creating them as their purpose as rewards was undermined.
Despite this, Sakurai continued to build hype for new characters through Fighter Reveal Videos, which were released during Nintendo Directs and other events. These videos kept the anticipation alive without requiring gameplay to unlock. Super Smash Bros. has introduced a total of 37 trailers featuring diverse characters from various gaming franchises.
The latest installment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch, boasts an extensive roster of fighters. With so many characters now in the game, Sakurai has expressed doubts about the franchise's potential to expand even further. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been critically acclaimed, with a review score of 9/10, hailing it as a massive and well-executed iteration of the series.
