SEGA Unhappy with New Game Sales
Feb 11, 2024 11:25 AMSega has expressed dissatisfaction with the sales figures of some of their latest video game releases, as indicated by their recent financial report. Despite a 4.2% increase in revenue for their gaming division, largely attributed to the acquisition of Angry Birds creator Rovio, their profit plunged 52.2% in comparison to the previous year. New games released in the last quarter, such as Sonic Superstars, Football Manager 2024, Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, and Persona 5 Tactica, did not meet the company's expectations. A bright spot was noted at the beginning of Sega's fourth fiscal quarter as both the newest Like A Dragon installment and Persona 3 Reload set sales records for their respective franchises. Sega has also revised its full-year forecasts down due to the underwhelming performance of these titles.
Why did Sega's latest games underperform in sales?
Sega believes that the underperformance is partly due to the release of major titles from other companies coinciding with their launches. Specifically, they reference the releases of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which debuted three days before Sonic Superstars. Additionally, overall market conditions and competition likely also played a role.
Sega is a renowned gaming company with a rich history dating back to the 1960s. It has been responsible for iconic gaming franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog, which has been a flagship character akin to Nintendo's Mario. The company's expansion into various domains, including the development of consoles like the Sega Genesis and Dreamcast, as well as their transition into a third-party game developer, is a testimony to their adaptability in the dynamic gaming industry. Sega's recent financial results serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the video game market and the challenge of maintaining consistent sales amidst stiff competition.
