Sony's Latest Blockbuster Dropped from Steam in Multiple Countries After Helldivers 2 Backlash

May 13, 2024 12:40 PM

The gaming community has recently been focused on the news regarding "Ghost of Tsushima," a popular action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game, initially available on PlayStation platforms, was set to be released on PC but faced significant backlash due to Sony's requirement for a PlayStation Network (PSN) account linkage for players, even in regions where PSN services are not available, severely limiting its accessibility.

This controversy mirrors a similar situation with "Helldivers 2," which Sony had to retract after a significant community backlash. Despite earlier assurances that a PSN account wouldn't be necessary for single-player, many countries without PSN access will not be able to purchase "Ghost of Tsushima" on Steam. With the release date on PC approaching and the current exclusion of 177 countries, including Albania, Georgia, Monaco, and Sri Lanka, the gaming audience's frustration is mounting.

In light of this, reactions from the gaming community have been largely negative, with players lamenting Sony's decision-making and its impact on the availability of "Ghost of Tsushima" in multiple regions. Steam, in response, has begun refunds for pre-orders, attributing the cancellations to the PSN requirement.

Is Ghost of Tsushima a single-player game?

Yes, "Ghost of Tsushima" is primarily a single-player game, featuring an expansive open world and a story-driven experience. It does, however, offer a multiplayer mode known as "Legends," which would typically require a PSN account for online play.

"Ghost of Tsushima" has been well-received since its original release, celebrated for its stunning visuals, engaging combat, and immersive storytelling set in feudal Japan. Playing as Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior, players must protect the island of Tsushima from the invading Mongol forces. The game has not only earned critical acclaim but also built a passionate fan base excited for its expansions and additional content.
