Sony slashes PS VR2 funding, only 2 games in development

Jun 23, 2024 11:54 AM

Oh dear, Sony is reportedly cutting funding for PS VR2 titles, with apparently only two titles currently in development internally. The PlayStation VR2 is just over a year old, but Sony appears to be reducing its investment in VR games. The high retail price of $550 and competition from more affordable and wireless options like the Meta Quest have hindered its success. Reports indicate that Sony might be pausing VR development due to a backlog of unsold units. The limited number of upcoming games and the additional cost to use PS VR2 on PC do not instill much confidence in the headset's future. However, the recently revealed Behemoth game might offer some hope.

Why is Sony reducing funding for PS VR2 games?

Sony is reportedly cutting funding for PS VR2 games due to several factors, including the high retail price of the headset, competition from more affordable and wireless VR options, and a backlog of unsold units. Only two new games are in development, raising concerns about the future viability of the device.

PS VR2, Sony's follow-up VR headset designed for the PS5, launched with high expectations. However, its $550 price tag, which exceeds the cost of the PS5 console, and the necessity for additional accessories to use it with a PC have made it less appealing compared to competitors like the Meta Quest. Despite setbacks, there is still potential for the platform if upcoming titles like Behemoth capture the interest of gamers.

It's a bummer to see Sony pull back on PS VR2 development; the high price and stiff competition definitely didn't help its case. Let's hope Behemoth and whatever comes down the line can reignite some excitement for the platform.
