Sony Slashes VR Budget: Just 2 First-Party Games Coming

Jun 21, 2024 2:11 PM

Sony is reportedly reducing its investment in virtual reality gaming, according to a new report. Only two first-party games for the PlayStation VR2 are currently in development. Sources indicate that Sony is making significant funding cuts to VR games, which limits future in-house VR game opportunities. Despite the PSVR2's advanced features like eye-tracking, the headset's high price and the need for a PS5 have hindered its adoption compared to other VR options like the Meta Quest 2. Sales performance has been disappointing, and there's been a decrease in new game releases specifically for PSVR2.

Why is Sony cutting back on VR game development?n

If Sony is reducing its investment in VR game development, it might be due to the disappointing sales performance of the PlayStation VR2 and increased competition in the VR market. The high cost of the PSVR2 and the need for additional hardware may also be contributing factors.

The PlayStation VR2, launched last year, boasts advanced features such as eye-tracking and HDR. However, its high price point and the necessity to own a PS5 have made it less appealing compared to more competitively priced headsets that offer standalone functionality and a variety of exclusive content. Additionally, significant studios focused on PSVR development, like First Contact Entertainment and London Studio, have shut down, further affecting the VR landscape.
