Sony’s PS3 Hailed with New Update 19 Years Later
Mar 05, 2025 11:30 AMSony has released a new system software update for the PlayStation 3, nearly 19 years after its initial launch. The update, version 4.92, focuses on improving system performance and renewing the Blu-ray player encryption key, essential for playing new disc media. Due to the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) key expiration, Sony has been consistently issuing updates for this purpose, a requirement unique to the PS3 as other consoles like the PS4 and PS5 handle this automatically. Even though the console ceased manufacturing in 2017, Sony is expected to continue these updates to support the existing user base.
Why is Sony still releasing updates for the PS3?Sony continues to release updates for the PS3 to maintain Blu-ray playback capabilities and enhance system performance, catering to users who still utilize the console despite its age.
Launched in 2006, the PlayStation 3 was a significant console for Sony, selling over 87.4 million units. It introduced features like Blu-ray support and robust online gaming options. While it has since been succeeded by the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, the PS3 maintains a nostalgic place in gaming history, with a dedicated community still enjoying its library of games.
