Switch-Emulator Creators Ordered to Pay $2.4M to NINTENDO

Mar 05, 2024 8:10 AM

The creators of the Yuzu Nintendo Switch emulator have been ordered to pay Nintendo a hefty $2.4 million fine as part of a settlement reached between the two parties. The emulator, which allowed people to play Switch games on a PC, was at the center of a lawsuit from Nintendo following piracy concerns, particularly after the early leak and widespread play of "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" prior to its release. In addition to the financial penalty, Tropic Haze, the team behind Yuzu, is now prohibited from distributing the emulator, its source code, and advertising it. The court order also prevents them from developing any new software that could circumvent Nintendo's digital protections, with the same rules applying to the 3DS emulator Citra, developed by the same team.

Why did Nintendo sue the creators of the Yuzu emulator?

Nintendo sued the creators of the Yuzu emulator because it allowed for unauthorized playing of their games on PCs, leading to issues of piracy and potential revenue loss, especially highlighted by the early access and playing of "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" by over a million people prior to its official release.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." Both games are exclusives for Nintendo's platforms, contributing significantly to the company's game sales and console adoption. This context heightens the impact of emulators like Yuzu on Nintendo's business, spotlighting the company's aggressive stance on protecting its intellectual property and the integrity of its gaming ecosystem.
