"The Eras Tour" by Taylor Swift, a concert movie, having made a prominent debut, broke records at the North American weekend box office. It raked in an estimated $96 million, marking the most successful opening for any concert movie. The film, distributed by Variance and AMC, overtook "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," which held the previous record with a debut of $73.01 million in 2010.
If ticket sales exceed estimates, "The Eras Tour" could potentially outrank "Never Say Never's" total worldwide revenue of $99.03 million. This achievement would make it the highest-grossing concert film to date, a feat expected to be realized within the next few days.
Besides being a record-breaking concert movie, it may also set a milestone as an October film release, possibly outshining the $96.20 million earnings by "Joker"'s debut weekend in 2019.
Interestingly, "The Eras Tour" will be screened exclusively on Thursdays to Sundays, to ensure crowded theaters and immersive concert-like experience, where viewers are encouraged to sing, dance, and even film during the screenings. Taylor Swift produced the movie herself and is set to gain about 57% of ticket sales, with theaters keeping the leftover revenue and AMC receiving a minor distribution fee.
The actual "Eras Tour," which kicked off in March 2023, is estimated by The Washington Post to fetch Swift up to $4.1 billion from a total billing of around $5.7 billion.
In comparison, "The Exorcist: Believer" placed a distant second with $11 million in its second weekend, followed by "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" with $7 million, "Saw X" with $5.7 million, and "The Creator" securing the fifth position with $4.3 million.
There's also fan speculation about Taylor Swift's appearance as Dazzler in "Deadpool 3". Stay tuned for more updates on "The Eras Tour" and make sure to catch it in theaters during its remarkable run.
