Jul 12, 2024 11:22 AM

Nexon's free-to-play looter shooter, The First Descendant, has quickly become a massive success, reaching 10 million players within just one week of launch. The game saw an impressive 264,860 peak concurrent players on Steam and has now drawn significant attention to its player count. However, The First Descendant also faces controversy, particularly with its aggressive monetization strategies like $100 character bundles and premium customization items that expire after use. Additionally, the game has been compared to Destiny 2 not just in terms of gameplay mechanics but also due to copying Destiny 2 icons, an issue Nexon has acknowledged and is addressing. Despite its popularity, the game's mixed reviews on Steam, influenced by its free-to-play model and monotonous quests, suggest there are areas for improvement.

It’s impressive to see The First Descendant hit such high player numbers right out of the gate, but these aggressive monetization tactics and the whole Destiny 2 icons fiasco could definitely hurt its long-term appeal. Hopefully, Nexon listens to the community and makes the necessary tweaks to keep those 10 million players engaged and satisfied for the long haul.
