The open-world MMO game "The Day Before" was highly anticipated for its post-apocalyptic setting and blend of features reminiscent of popular games like The Last of Us and The Division. The game quickly became the most wishlisted game on Steam before a series of delays and controversies caused fans to lose faith in the developer, Fntastic. Despite the setbacks, the release date was set for November 10, 2023.
The Day Before was first announced by Fntastic in January 2021 with a five-minute trailer which excited the gaming community with its exquisite graphics and seamless gameplay. A series of gameplay trailers in the following months only fueled the excitement. However, things took a turn when Fntastic went quiet after releasing a gameplay video in April, causing the enthusiasm for the game to simmer down.
In October of 2021, the release date of The Day Before was finally announced through a new trailer. Over the next few months, Fntastic courted controversy with issues such as reports involving its "volunteering culture". The years 2022 and 2023 witnessed more troubles for the game with trademark disputes resulting in the game's Steam page being removed. The delay for the release date of the game was also announced due to the trademark issue.
The situation escalated in 2023 when Fntastic admitted to IGN that the delay had been planned before the trademark dispute, sparking uproar among the fanbase. Furthermore, the community accused Fntastic of copying gameplay elements from other games and using them in The Day Before. The developer defended itself on Twitter citing the dangers of disinformation. However, the mistrust from the community resulted in a shift in the marketing strategy, with Fntastic promising regular updates on the game moving forward.
In November 2023, Fntastic announced two delays for the game, finally declaring that the game would be released on December 7, 2023 as Early Access for the PC and that the PS5 and Xbox versions of the game would be delayed indefinitely.
Despite the controversy, Fntastic remains optimistic towards its final product, providing reassurances that it'll be a success.
