A 38-year-old resident of Tokyo has recently been detained on grounds of stalking, including reported harassment in the Multiplayer video game Final Fantasy 14. This arrest, as revealed by Kobe News and confirmed by Siliconera and IGN, resulted from reported violations of Japan's Anti-Stalking Control Law.
The suspect is accused of sending menacing messages to a 28-year-old woman via social media platforms like Twitter and Line, and in the virtual environment of Final Fantasy 14. It remains uncertain how many of these alleged instances took place within the game, where players can interact with each other freely, browsing the virtual universe.
In the scope of the game, the man was said to have pursued the woman’s character uninvitedly whilst delivering inappropriate messages. Even after being blocked, the suspect continued his pursuit. His messages both within the game and on social media platforms purportedly urged the woman to engage with him, implying that if she didn't, he'd disclose previous private conversations to her family.
Though facing various allegations, the man has denied some charges, proclaiming that he harbours no romantic feelings towards the victim.
Final Fantasy 14 allows players to explore a fantastical world, fight monsters and interact with one another. A recent October update has enabled players to enjoy the game completely solo, albeit still requiring an internet connection due to the constant presence of other players in the game world.
