Twisted Metal Game Canceled: A Unique Combo of Genres

Mar 03, 2025 1:13 PM

New images of a canceled Twisted Metal game have surfaced, revealing a project, codenamed Project Copper, that aimed to blend the franchise's renowned vehicular combat with elements of battle royale gameplay. Developed by Firesprite, this live service title was designed as a third-person vehicular action game with shooter mechanics, featuring the goal of being the last player standing. Unfortunately, the project was halted amid layoffs at Sony in early 2024, following a broader retreat from live service games. Despite its popularity as a classic PlayStation franchise, Twisted Metal has not seen a new release since the PS3 era, with Sony recently canceling multiple other live service titles due to poor market performance. In brighter news for fans, a Twisted Metal TV series starring Anthony Mackie is confirmed to return for a second season on Peacock.

Will Twisted Metal ever see a new game release?

While there are no current plans for a new Twisted Metal game following the cancellation of Project Copper, the franchise’s rich history and dedicated fanbase keep hopes alive for a revival in the future.

The Twisted Metal franchise, launched in 1995, is known for its unique blend of vehicular combat and chaotic gameplay. Featuring a rogues' gallery of colorful characters and demolition derby-style action, it has become a beloved classic in the gaming community. Though the series has experienced a long hiatus, it remains a nostalgic symbol for many gamers, celebrating its legacy through various media, including the upcoming TV adaptation.
