U.S. Justice Dept Sues APPLE for Antitrust Violations

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against tech giant Apple, alleging that the company has been engaging in anti-competitive practices that maintain a monopoly in the smartphone market. The DOJ argues these practices harm both app developers and consumers by reducing competition, resulting in higher prices and lesser innovation. One practice targeted by the lawsuit is the 30% commission that Apple charges developers for app store sales, often termed the 'app store tax.' Another point of contention is Apple's messaging service, iMessage, and its incompatibility with Rich Communication Services (RCS), a standard used by Android phones. Apple's resistance to supporting RCS has caused tension with competitors such as Google and Samsung. In response to the lawsuit, Apple defended its practices, stating that it continually innovates its technology for user benefit and that the lawsuit misunderstands the company's principles and the competitive tech market.

The DOJ accuses Apple of illegally maintaining a monopoly in the smartphone market, which it claims results in less competition, higher prices, and stifled innovation.

Apple, known for its iPhone, iPad, and Mac products, has a history of legal challenges regarding its business practices. The current lawsuit by the DOJ isn't the first time Apple has faced antitrust allegations. In 2012, the company was sued for conspiring with publishers to fix ebook prices. Apple has also been at the center of debates over app store policies, particularly after a high-profile lawsuit with Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, challenging the company’s app distribution and payment processes.
