Valve Announces SteamOS Support for Asus ROG Ally

Aug 14, 2024 1:50 PM

Valve has confirmed that it plans to allow rival handheld gaming devices, including the Asus ROG Ally, to run its Linux-based SteamOS. This announcement comes after a recent update revealed initial support for the device's keys, although the full implementation of SteamOS on these handhelds is still in progress and not ready for deployment just yet. Valve has also hinted at ongoing work for dual-booting capabilities between SteamOS and Windows for the Steam Deck but has not provided a timeline for its release. This move could enhance the gaming experience on portable PCs by giving users more flexibility in accessing various digital game libraries.

nWill SteamOS be available for all handhelds soon?

While Valve is making strides towards making SteamOS available for more handheld devices, it is currently not ready for all competing systems, and users should not expect immediate support for devices like the ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go.

The Asus ROG Ally is part of a growing trend in portable PC gaming that started gaining traction with the release of the Steam Deck. Since then, several manufacturers have launched similar devices, aiming to create a viable alternative for gamers who want high performance on the go. The added support from SteamOS could greatly enhance the functionality and appeal of these competing handhelds, making them more versatile for gamers.
