"Breaking Bad" fans might be feeling disappointed as the show's creator Vince Gilligan shuts down the idea of a Walt Jr. spin-off.
In a recent Variety interview, Gilligan stated that the prospect of Walt Jr. following in his father's footsteps was "doubtful as hell". While he cherished the thought of working with actor RJ Mitte (Walter White Jr.) again, Gilligan felt that a storyline featuring Walt Jr. trapped in a life of crime would be depressingly wrong.
"Breaking Bad" famously concluded its five seasons with the demise of Walter White, its central character, in a meth lab. Despite the difficult times faced by Walt's wife, Skyler, and son, Walt Jr., Gilligan wants to envision a brighter future for them. This also includes rejection of the idea of Walt Jr. becoming an Albuquerque crime lord, a proposition he believes someone might pitch in a decade or two.
However, the possibility of seeing Walt Jr. and Skyler reprised in future series isn't entirely dismissed. Gilligan expresses, "It's fun thinking about what would happen to the characters, but it doesn't rise to the level of, 'Gee, I’d like to tell more about the story,’".
In terms of quality, "Breaking Bad" doesn't disappoint. IGN rated the show's 5th season a perfect 10/10, praising its meticulous long-term planning with swift gratification and its aptitude for implying rather than expounding.
