Skull Island: Rise of Kong, a $39.99 action-adventure game, was launched on October 17, 2023. The game, developed by Chilean studio IguanaBee and published by Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's GameMill Entertainment under licence from DeVito ArtWorks, has been harshly criticized and dubbed as "the worst game of 2023." IguanaBee is also known for their work on games like 2020's G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout and Headsnatchers. Despite the game's description as an "exhilarating, third-person action-adventure game", reports and social media critiques signal the stark contrast in reality.
The game has already gained infamy, with a tweet showcasing a low-quality cutscene being viewed nearly seven million times and another highlighting the rudimentarily action gameplay fetching over a quarter of a million views. Skull Island: Rise of Kong presents players with the opportunity to play as Kong, who is seeking revenge for his parent's death by saurian terror Gaw. The game's release also marks the first new King Kong game in 18 years, succeeding Ubisoft's well-received Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie from 2005.
To the gaming community's disappointment, the game has fallen short of fans’ nostalgic memories and expectations. Notably, fans have flagged questions about the quality control employed by console platform holders like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo in approving a game of such poor quality for release on their curated storefronts. The game has brought back memories of 2017’s Life of Black Tiger, which was once called the worst PlayStation 4 game ever.
