Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2023 that World of Warcraft's next three expansions will be part of a larger narrative called The Worldsoul Saga. The decision to develop and announce three expansions at one go was motivated by the game's upcoming 20th anniversary and the return of Warcraft executive creative director Chris Metzen who proposed the ambitious idea.

The first expansion, The War Within, will be released in 2024, and will take players to subterranean kingdoms within Azeroth, introducing new zones like Azj-kahet, Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, and Hallowfall, along with new dungeons and raids. The next expansion, Midnight, will take players to Azeroth's "Old World" in Quel-thalas where Void forces are attempting to destroy the Sunwell. The Last Titan, the final expansion, will take place in the Northrend region, and will involve the return of the titans to Azeroth, revealing a vast conspiracy related to them.

According to WoW vice president Holly Longdale and Warcraft SVP & general manager John Hight, this approach will hopefully reduce the wait times between expansions, while offering players a continuous narrative experience, somewhat similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They added that players can join in at any stage without having to start with The War Within, similar to standalone films in an overarching franchise.
