Brandon Sanderson teams up with Tomorrow Studios on Skyward adaptation

Award-winning author Brandon Sanderson has recently been announced as the writer working with Tomorrow Studios on an adaptation of his popular YA series, Skyward . The announcement came as a surprise to fans, especially given Sanderson’s ongoing projects, such as the Mistborn scripts for Apple TV.

How the partnership came together

According to Sanderson, he began serious talks with Tomorrow Studios about four to five years ago. That happened after the successful launch of the live-action One Piece series. In a recent YouTube update, Sanderson said this was a key moment; the quality of the One Piece adaptation convinced him to work with the Tomorrow Studios team.

The status of the Skyward series

So far, the Skyward adaptation does not yet have a streaming service attached for an exclusive release. Sanderson explained that in his talks with Tomorrow Studios he met with several teams, but ultimately chose the exec he admired most within the company. He praised showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa "Mo" Tancheroen as excellent partners for this new series.

One Piece as inspiration

The live-action One Piece series, which debuted on Netflix in August 2023, proved to be a major success and became one of the platform’s most popular shows. Season 2, released earlier in 2026, even received a better critical response than the first season. That success likely helped build Sanderson’s confidence in Tomorrow Studios, as his options seemed increasingly validated by the performance of other projects.

Sanderson’s focus on his books remains, and he has promised that he will soon return to his literary work, including revisions on Ghostbloods , the next phase in his Mistborn series.
