Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory: new animated film announced

Netflix and Sony Pictures have officially announced the animated film titled Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. This new take on the classic story is being directed by Jared Stern, known for his work on The LEGO Batman Movie. The film, produced by Sony Pictures Imageworks, is scheduled for release in 2027.

Director and production

Jared Stern, who previously found success directing The LEGO Batman Movie, is leading this project. The team behind the film also comes from the studio responsible for popular titles such as KPop Demon Hunters and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Stern’s involvement suggests the studio is aiming for a mix of humor and adventure, similar to his earlier work.

Voice cast

The film will feature Taika Waititi as the voice of the iconic Willy Wonka. Waititi, known for Thor: Ragnarok, brings his signature style to the character previously played by Gene Wilder, Johnny Depp, and Timothée Chalamet. Kit Connor, known for the series Heartstopper, will take on the new role of Charley Paley. Charley appears to be a different direction from the original Charlie Bucket character, raising expectations for the film.

Story and setting

Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory takes place years after Wonka’s famous Golden Ticket contest. Wonka returns to his factory after spending time behind bars for turning a child into a blueberry, a plot point fans of the original story will recognize. The synopsis says Wonka is determined to bring some sweetness to a bitter world, but he is faced with a new generation of “rotten” kids, including Charley Paley, who are at risk of losing their homes.

The visuals released so far show a modern London skyline with Wonka’s colorful factory standing out as the main feature. The factory is marked by huge purple glass windows and a bright pink Wonka logo, with tall smokestacks sending out a rainbow of colored smoke. The hungry teens trying to get into the factory are in for an adventurous journey, complete with all the wonders and surprises the story promises.
