Stephen Colbert responds to concerns over his involvement in Lord of the Rings spinoff

Stephen Colbert, the well-known late-night talk show host, has responded to online concerns about his role as co-writer on the upcoming Lord of the Rings spinoff, titled 'Shadow of the Past'. The announcement of Colbert's involvement in the project sparked some controversy, with some fans claiming he only landed the job because of his fame as a superfan of the franchise.

Colbert's passion for Middle-earth

Colbert has shared his love and knowledge of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth publicly over the years. He has spent years writing for his own shows, but until now nothing on the scale of a Lord of the Rings film. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Colbert said there is no reason to doubt his suitability for the role. "There is no reason to," he said. "It's valuable not to address it, because as an artist you can only follow your heart and use the skills you've learned."

What 'Shadow of the Past' is about

'Shadow of the Past' aims to add new depth to the original trilogy, revealing events that were not shown in Peter Jackson's film adaptation. The film will focus on chapters three through eight of the Fellowship novel, where the Hobbits travel farther from the Shire and encounter the mysterious Tom Bombadil, which Jackson's version skipped in favor of moving more quickly to Bree and Weathertop.

The story will be told through flashbacks, with an older Sam, Merry, and Pippin reliving their adventures alongside Sam's daughter Elanor more than ten years after the events of 'Return of the King'. The film's synopsis reads: "Fourteen years after Frodo's death, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out once again to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter Elanor has uncovered a long-buried secret and wants to find out why the War of the Ring was almost lost before it even began."

Colbert is not the film's only writer; he is working alongside franchise veteran Philippa Boyens. Boyens previously collaborated with Jackson on the scripts for the original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Colbert said, "Luckily, I don't have to do this alone. I have a great Sherpa in Philippa Boyens, who cares just as much as I do. Every minute of this process has been a joy so far."

There are currently no official release dates for 'Shadow of the Past', so fans will likely have to wait a while longer for more details on the promising project.
