Stranger than Heaven has drawn plenty of attention since its reveal as Project Century at The Game Awards 2024. This new addition to the Yakuza series, developed by RGG Studio, promises an immersive experience with an impressive cast and unique gameplay mechanics. Story and setting

Stranger than Heaven follows the life of Makoto Daito, portrayed by Japanese actor Yu Shirota. Makoto is born to an American father and a Japanese mother, and grows up in early-1910s America, where he quickly becomes an outsider after his father’s death. He decides to escape by hiding aboard a ship in the port of San Francisco, bound for Japan, in the hope of finding acceptance.

The game spans 50 years and covers five major periods in Japanese history. Players will follow a story that begins in 1915 and ends in 1965. The narrative takes place across several cities and eras, including:

• Kokura in 1915, a port city

• Kure, a Yakuza-controlled city in 1929

• Osaka during the war in 1943

• Atami after the war in 1951

• Kamurocho, Shinjuku in 1965

Each of these periods offers a different look at organized crime and Japanese culture in that specific era. Players will see the world around Makoto change, and he will often be tempted to surround himself with less savory characters.

Gameplay and unique features

What makes Stranger than Heaven stand out is its innovative gameplay. Its combat systems differ from previous RGG Studio titles. Players use the shoulder and trigger buttons to control the left and right sides of Makoto’s body independently. This opens up new attack possibilities, such as charging up one arm while the other delivers rapid strikes.

In addition, Makoto can pick up, buy, or craft weapons such as knives and hammers, adding a strategic layer to combat. Throughout the game, Makoto also takes part in various side activities, including minigames ranging from arm wrestling to managing a music venue, highlighting his musical talent.

Characters and voices

The game introduces a range of characters, including Orpheus, voiced by famous rapper Snoop Dogg. Orpheus is a smuggler figure involved in underground activities and helps Makoto navigate the complex world of organized crime. Other key characters include Yu Shinjo, a close friend and rival of Makoto, and Takashi, a young Yakuza who admires Makoto.

During the presentation, other voice roles were also announced, such as Tori Kelly as Suzy, a foreign singer trying to build her career in Japan, along with notable appearances from actors like Moeka Hoshi and Dean Fujioka.
