Wild Gunman '74: Nintendo's rare arcade classic restored

Wild Gunman '74, a little-known but technically groundbreaking Nintendo arcade game, has recently been restored by a dedicated fan. Originally produced in 1974, the game used full-motion video to depict Wild West quick-draw shootouts. Creator Gunpei Yokoi, a legendary figure in the game industry, was responsible for the game’s design, which was considered innovative at the time.

A loss to history

Although Wild Gunman '74 initially drew attention in trade magazines, it did not translate into strong sales. Only around 100 units were sold, making the game extremely rare. Today, there is only one known working unit, owned by a private collector. The game’s age, the secrecy surrounding its technology, and its limited availability make it especially difficult to find a surviving example.

Restoring Wild Gunman '74

Callan Brown, a Canadian arcade collector and repair specialist, recently had the chance to acquire several original film reels from Wild Gunman '74 through an eBay auction. Inspired by the find, he decided to restore the game. In a series of videos, he documented the process, highlighting his historical research and the game’s unique technology.

In his video, Brown shows how the film reels affect the gameplay experience and how they can degrade over time. While not all of the reels were available, he preserved the best fragments and designed a new cabinet and gun unit. The result is an impressive recreation of the original arcade experience that amazed audiences in the 1970s.

Technical details and build process

Brown began modeling the arcade cabinet in July 2025. During the process, he realized he was able to build the full cabinet rather than a simplified model. The restoration was completed in February 2026, with the goal of publishing the project and showing it to a wider audience. Brown used modern technology, including CAD design and 3D printing, to create the cabinet. The software reprogramming was done in Unity, a platform he had previously used for VR simulations.
