Zorro: new French series with Jean Dujardin

A new French TV series, titled Zorro, offers a fresh take on the iconic character of the legendary swashbuckling hero. The eight-episode series stars Oscar winner Jean Dujardin and premieres on June 30 in the US and Canada via Kino Lorber’s MHz Choice.

Story and setting

Zorro is set in 1821, in a rapidly changing Los Angeles. Don Diego de la Vega, played by Jean Dujardin, unexpectedly inherits the role of mayor after his father’s death. After taking on the position, Diego discovers the city is burdened by heavy debt and corruption. The series’ main antagonist, Don Emmanuel, is played by Eric Elmosnino.

Diego is determined to restore order and secure vital access to water for the community, but he quickly realizes politics alone won’t be enough to fight corruption and growing unrest. After 20 years, he revives his long-abandoned alter ego and becomes the masked avenger Zorro, fighting for the people while trying to govern as mayor.

The team behind the series

The series was created and co-written by Benjamin Charbit, Noé Debré, and Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud, and was filmed entirely in Spain. Alongside Dujardin, the cast includes Audrey Dana, Salvatore Ficarra, and Grégory Gadebois, bringing a wide range of performances to the series.

Themes and emotional conflict

The series explores not only the fight against corruption and Zorro’s role as a folk hero, but also the personal chaos Diego finds himself in. His wife, Gabriella, played by Audrey Dana, becomes increasingly drawn to the mystery and passion surrounding Zorro, unaware that her husband and the masked hero are the same person. Their complicated relationship adds humor, romance, and emotional conflict, while Diego struggles to balance his duties as mayor with his life as Zorro.

With this new interpretation, Zorro brings the beloved character back to life for a new audience, promising an exciting mix of adventure, drama, and emotional depth.
