Capcom is developing a next-generation version of their powerful and flexible RE Engine, codenamed REX. This new engine will contain all previous features of RE Engine, adding support for new technologies and handling the growth of assets more efficiently. Capcom's solution to tackle the challenges of high customization per game is to develop this "new standard of engine."

The upcoming technology will be introduced into the existing engine in stages. Dragon's Dogma II is set to be the next game employing the RE Engine technology, and rumors suggest a new Monster Hunter game to be on the horizon for 2024.

The development of the original RE Engine started in 2014 and was first used in Resident Evil 7 in 2017. While other developers rely on established solutions such as Unreal Engine, Capcom's choice seems to have paid off as they have consistently released games rated among those with the best technical standards on any gaming platform.

While we await the new engine, the original RE Engine continues to perform well. Dragon's Dogma 2 seems promising as it doubles down on everything that made the original game unique, and it is set to release in 2024 on Xbox, PC, and PS5.
