Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, has announced a partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to implement age ratings for player-created content. This move aims to increase safety and allow parents and players to make more informed decisions. From November 14, all playable content will feature an age classification ranging from E (Everyone) to Teen.
The process will involve players completing a questionnaire whilst publishing their creative content, the answers to which will determine the age classification. The rating will be visible to other players before they engage with the content. Local rating authorities, like PEGI in Europe, will retain the power to modify these classifications as needed.
Patricia Vance of IARC, speaking on the Fortnite's evolution from its battle royale origins to a more expansive ecosystem involving various content creators, emphasized the importance of parents being knowledgeable about the content their children aim to access.
The announcement underlines the commitment of Epic Games to enhancing the safety and inclusivity of its gaming ecosystem, taking into account the diversity of its player base.
