George R.R. Martin Reveals What He'd Change in Game of Thrones

Aug 20, 2024 10:59 AM

George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, humorously expressed his desire to have his unfinished book, The Winds of Winter, completed. During a conversation at the Oxford Writers' House, he reflected on his career and noted that if he could change one thing about his writing, it would be the timely completion of his work. The Winds of Winter has faced significant delays, initially expected three years after the previous book, A Dance with Dragons, which was released in 2014. As it stands, this highly anticipated sequel is over a decade late. Despite having written around 1,100 pages, Martin acknowledges the considerable amount of work still required before it is finished. He also shared insights on how having fewer external pressures, like those experienced by fellow author Gene Wolfe, could lead to a more liberated creative process. Additionally, he teased future plot elements regarding the complex relationship between dragons and humans in the upcoming book.

When will The Winds of Winter be released?

There is currently no official release date for The Winds of Winter, but fans are hoping it will arrive sometime between 2024 and 2028. Martin continues to work on the book, keeping fans engaged through updates and teasers.

The Winds of Winter is the eagerly awaited sixth installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which has captivated audiences worldwide. The series gained monumental popularity, particularly following the HBO adaptation, Game of Thrones, which spurred interest in Martin's original works. The narrative is known for its intricate storytelling, deep character development, and unexpected twists, drawing readers into a rich, fantastical world filled with political intrigue and supernatural elements. With multiple spin-offs like House of the Dragon currently in production and fresh cover designs for the existing books, fans remain hopeful for Martin's eventual completion of this saga.

It's wild to think that fans are still waiting for The Winds of Winter while Martin has crafted over a thousand pages – talk about a rollercoaster of anticipation I get that creative freedom is key, but at this rate, we might need a spin-off series just about the wait

It's always amusing to see how an author's own timelines can spiral out of control, especially someone like Martin who's juggling a massive legacy. While fans are understandably eager for The Winds of Winter, it sounds like it's going to be a wild ride once he finally breaks through that creative wall
