GTA boosts Netflix Games playtime threefold

Jan 23, 2024 11:16 PM

Netflix's gaming engagement has seen a significant boost, according to their latest fiscal 2023 full-year earnings report, with game engagement surging to three times its previous levels. This growth has been largely attributed to the addition of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) Trilogy to its gaming lineup. Netflix has hailed the GTA Trilogy as its most successful gaming venture yet, with high rates of installs and engagement, even contributing to new subscriber sign-ups.

Despite this upturn, Netflix remains a minor player in the gaming industry when compared to giants like Sony and Xbox. Data from Apptopia in October revealed that less than 1% of Netflix's 250 million subscribers were playing its games daily. Netflix acknowledges the games division is still modest in scale compared to its film and series business but plans to broaden and invest further in gaming. There is no concrete information from Netflix about potential in-app purchases or ads within games as these features remain internal discussion points as of now.

Aside from gaming, Netflix has also reported a substantial subscriber increase in the last quarter of 2023 and anticipates the release of "Squid Game" Season 2 sometime in 2024.

Which game contributed to Netflix Games' increased engagement recently?

The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy contributed significantly to the increased gaming engagement on Netflix.

The Grand Theft Auto series, developed by Rockstar North, is known for its open-world design, narrative, and gameplay mechanics. Starting with the original GTA in 1997, the series has become a monumental success over the years, influencing the gaming industry and pop culture. The GTA Trilogy, which includes GTA III, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas, is revered for evolving the series with deeper narratives and extensive open worlds, marking a significant era in video gaming history.
