"Layoffs at PlayStation Studios in San Diego"

Oct 23, 2023 9:16 AM
Multiple employees have reported layoffs at several PlayStation studios in San Diego. Former employees of Sony San Diego Studio and Visual Arts have announced their dismissal on social media, with senior level designer Daniel Bellemere from Visual Arts referring to a "wave of layoffs". Matt Barney, a senior technical recruiter at San Diego Studio, claims the same, while several employees indicate their contracts have not been renewed.

Visual Arts is a support studio that collaborates with Naughty Dog and other studios. San Diego Studio, on the other hand, is primarily known for the MLB games. As of now, the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed.

This year sees an alarming number of layoffs within the gaming industry. For instance, contracts of at least 25 Naughty Dog employees have been terminated earlier than expected. In fact, there have been reports about layoffs at Team17 and the team behind Hearthstone. To put things into perspective, Epic Games announced earlier this year that it was laying off around 16% of its workforce - about 830 employees. CD Projekt Red proceeded to let go of approximately 10% of their employees, while Microsoft laid off around 10,000 workers. A series of layoffs also took place at companies such as Ubisoft, Bioware, Telltale, and Crystal Dynamics.

In addition to the massive layoffs, several high-ranking officials have resigned from their positions within companies. This year, for instance, Jim Ryan announced his departure from Sony PlayStation, while Pete Hines is leaving Bethesda. John Riccitiello is stepping down from Unity.
