Meta Ditches Ambitious Apple Vision Pro Rival Plans - Report

Aug 23, 2024 6:42 PM

Meta has reportedly canceled its plans for a high-end mixed-reality headset, code-named La Jolla, which was slated for a 2027 release. This decision follows issues with production costs related to MicroOLED displays commonly used in competitors like the Apple Vision Pro. Despite Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth's downplay of the situation, the cancellation reflects ongoing challenges within Meta's Reality Labs division, including the indefinite hold on a VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and recent restructuring. Interestingly, despite these setbacks, Meta is still planning to launch two versions of the Quest 4 in 2026 and has an exclusive title, Batman: Arkham Shadow, set for release on Quest 3 in October.

What challenges is Meta facing in its mixed-reality endeavors?

Meta is grappling with high production costs, the cancellation of major projects like the La Jolla headset, limits on their VR game development, and recent layoffs and restructuring within its Reality Labs division, all of which contribute to a challenging environment for their VR and mixed-reality ventures.

Meta, originally known as Facebook, has been heavily invested in virtual and mixed-reality technologies, believing it to be a cornerstone of its vision for the future, including social interactions and the metaverse experience. The Apple Vision Pro, which the La Jolla was intended to compete against, has also faced hurdles, demonstrating a competitive yet volatile market for high-end VR devices. Meta's ongoing developments, such as the Quest series and exclusive game releases, show that while the company faces significant challenges, it continues to pursue innovation in the virtual reality space.

It’s interesting to see Meta pull the plug on the La Jolla headset, especially with the mixed-reality landscape heating up. The struggle with production costs is a real cautionary tale, but the fact that they’re still pushing ahead with the Quest 4 shows there's determination to navigate these challenges
