In a sequence of developer blogs published on October 17, 2023, Nintendo addressed multiple inquiries about the forthcoming 2D platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder, firmly asserting that the game was not inspired by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Despite a substantial graphical upgrade from New Super Mario Bros., the team behind Super Mario Bros. Wonder disclosed that they hadn't received much information about the progress of the film since both were simultaneously in development. Nintendo emphatically denies any influence by the Chris Pratt-starring movie on Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Developer Masanobu Sato suggested that only Tezuka-san and Kondo-san from the team had intimate knowledge of the film's details, as the rest of the team hadn't been briefed about the film's content during their game's development. Another developer, Takashi Tezuka, further clarified that they were not aware of the movie's release date during the development period. However, they presumed some audience would play the game after watching the movie. Therefore, they were mindful of creating a game that would not bring disappointment, ensuring every aspect was given a lot of attention and detail.
The developers also touched on the more advanced capabilities of the Switch compared to previous hardware. They mentioned how a lot of their intricate design work would unfortunately stay unseen as the game is entirely in 2D. Topics like character redesigns, the creation of Elephant Mario and other development aspects were also covered in their blogs. The release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is imminent, with reviewers highlighting the models and animations that the Nintendo developers put in so much effort to perfect.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, developed by Nintendo EAD, will be available on Nintendo Switch from October 20, 2023, with the final rating still pending.
