Patent might suggest more realistic animations in Grand Theft Auto 6

Oct 30, 2023 3:58 PM

A patent filed by Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise, hints at more realistic animations in the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. The patent describes a 'System and Method for Virtual Character Locomotion' invented by Tobias Kleanthous, who was specialized in animation and AI-gameplay at Rockstar from 2014 to 2021. The new animation technique will enable game characters to move more naturally and realistically, selecting and linking the most suitable movements for a situation from a complete library. These potentially include scenarios to depict a character as tired or injured.

Fans speculate that this technology will contribute to a more immersive gaming experience in GTA 6, with AI characters reacting naturally to situations such as changes in in-game weather. Rockstar has been working on the new GTA game for some time, although official details are limited. Leaked images from a game's early version appear to corroborate rumours of two main characters - a man and a woman - and a game world based on Miami, or Vice City. The official release date for the game has not yet been announced.
