Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has achieved considerable sales success, cementing its place as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in a single day. Insomniac's PlayStation 5 exclusive has sold more than 2.5 million copies in a mere 24 hours, a figure that also includes pre-order sales and units grouped with PS5s, as disclosed by Sony. Sony's latest sales milestone positions Spider-Man 2 above Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarok for day-one launch sales.
Eric Lempel, SVP, Global Marketing, Sales, and Business Operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, praised Insomniac Games for their commitment to delivering engaging and innovative gameplay experiences. Being Insomniac Games' third instalment in the franchise, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was designed from scratch to fully leverage PlayStation 5's unique features. Sony hopes players can become immersed for hours within the epic storyline, substantial Marvel New York, and added game features.
However, it remains uncertain whether Spider-Man 2 can surpass God of War Ragnarok's debut week sales record of 5.1 million copies, considering the former is a PS5 exclusive, hence catering to a potentially smaller install base compared to last year's Ragnarok.
Additionally, Spider-Man 2 denotes a pivotal launch for PlayStation, with Sony aiming to trigger a boost in PS5 sales, which is a prerequisite for playing the game. As of August, Sony envisages that sales of its console could accelerate sufficiently to reach its aim of 25 million PS5s sold this fiscal year.
In IGN's review of Spider-Man 2, the game was seen as a "blessed and cursed" sequel in an extraordinary series, praised for refining successful combat and web-swinging formulas without major revolutionising needed. However, the expanded open world of New York City warrants a radical rethinking as it currently is extensive but lacks improvement, including a tedious checklist of mostly repetitive side tasks.
