In recent news, Nintendo has confirmed that it will be discontinuing the online services for its 3DS and Wii U platforms by early April 2024. Services to be affected include data distribution, internet rankings, online play, among others that rely on online communication. This decision comes as a consequence of decreasing user counts for these platforms and Nintendo's increased commitment towards maintaining services for Switch.
These changes will not immediately impact services like Pokemon Bank, although discontinuation may be considered at a later time. This is following Nintendo's previous move to shut down the 3DS and Wii U eShops in March 2023. Despite this, software and DLC updates, as well as re-downloading purchases from the eShop, can still be performed for the time being.
For users, this means that 3DS and Wii U will no longer support online multiplayer games come April 2024. It's therefore advised to retrieve any desired updates or DLC before this time. While this marks the end of online services for these consoles, there's still a plethora of great games available that can be enjoyed offline.
The 3DS, launched in 2011 as the successor to Nintendo DS, has sold an impressive 75.94 million units as of June 2023, while the Wii U sold 13.56 million units. Even though this represents the end of an era for these consoles, the rich gaming experiences they offer can still be enjoyed offline, ensuring their legacy remains intact.
