VALVE LAUNCHES FAMILY FEATURE ON STEAM
Mar 19, 2024 12:35 PMValve has officially launched a new feature called Steam Families, aimed at enhancing gaming experience for families. This service, now available in beta, allows up to six members of a family to share their Steam game libraries with each other. With Steam Families, each person retains ownership of their purchased games and continues to have their own progress, achievements, and workshop items. Games are shareable at the discretion of the developers, and multiple copies of the same game are necessary if family members wish to play simultaneously. This update significantly improves upon the previous family sharing capabilities, incorporating better parental controls and mechanisms for child purchase requests on Steam.
How does Steam Families differ from the previous Steam Family Sharing?Steam Families offers an updated sharing experience that not only allows easier sharing of game libraries among family members but also introduces enhanced parental controls and a system for handling child purchase requests, providing a more comprehensive family-oriented gaming platform compared to the previous Steam Family Sharing option.
Background: Steam, developed by Valve Corporation, has long been the predominant platform for PC gaming, offering a massive catalog of games, user reviews, forums, and much more. The introduction of Steam Families builds on Valve's commitment to creating a user-friendly and community-oriented gaming experience. By improving the ways in which games are shared and managed within a family, Valve acknowledges and caters to the diverse needs of its global user base, ultimately aiming to make gaming more accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.
